Jiu-Jitsu

Jiu-jitsu is a form of martial arts that has originated from Japan. Basically, it focuses on grappling techniques including throwing, joint locks, trapping, holds, striking, kicking, disengagements, and the like. This form of martial arts was brought to Brazil by Mitsuyo Maeda and it became popularly known as Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. Depending on the jiu-jitsu school you are enrolling to, the approaches can be different.

The Concept of Jiu-Jitsu

Jiu-jitsu can be better understood if you know what this term means. Jiu or ju means gentle, flexible, pliable or supple while jitsu or jutsu stands for art or technique.  From here, you can tell that Jiu-jitsu is a form of martial arts that do not actually use one's own force. Instead, the opponent's force is used against himself.

Brazilian jiu-jitsu is very different from other forms of other martial arts system. Aside from utilizing gentle techniques, jiu-jitsu focuses more on throwing, joint-locking, strangling, choking, immobilizing, and pinning. The art of jiu-jitsu is divided into five different sectors of training such as the following:

  • Art of Blocking. This is the first step towards mastering jiu-jitsu. This level works to train the student in defending themselves against attack.
  • Art of Fulcrum Throw. It teaches the student in using a point of leverage with the purpose of throwing the opponent.
  • Art of the Non-Fulcrum Throw. This is the art of throwing with little or no direct contact with the one being thrown.
  • Art of Escaping. This teaches how to get out of grapples to avoid being thrown, pinned, choked, locked, or strangled.
  • Art of Striking. This is a technique that works to teach the use of physical blow, punches, and kicks using minimal effort but ensuring maximum effect.

Furthermore, jiu-jitsu has a lot of benefits to students. Brazilian jiu-jitsu is not only used for self defense but most students learn this art for sports competitions like MMA. Besides this, practicing this art can promote physical fitness as it can be comparable to workouts. Kids and adults alike can very well benefit a lot from this art. Brazilian Jiu-jitsu also teaches respect and discipline.
